Naturopathy

If your body is given the right support, it is able to heal itself.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a holistic system of healing that incorporates a range of treatments and natural therapies, with the underlying belief that your body given the right support, is able to heal itself.

A naturopathic practitioner deals with internal health problems, metabolic disorders and imbalances, through treatment of the whole person. In general, a wide range of assessment techniques are employed to uncover the real reasons behind illness and treatment may involve nutritional advice, dietary changes, herbal medicines, bodywork or nutritional supplements.

Naturopathy is also about preventative strategies as well.  Key markers can be addressed and testing (such as microbiome testing) can be performed to ensure that good health is maintained or negative health consequences avoided.  Preventative measures can be put in place based upon a client’s history or symptoms to ensure small issues do not become large ones.

Aspects of Naturopathy

Nutritional Advice

Food and nutrition are the way that we get fuel, providing energy for our bodies. We need to replace nutrients in our bodies with a new supply every day. Fats, proteins, and carbohydrates are all required as well as maintaining key vitamins and minerals.  Without them our bodies cannot operate efficiently.

The effective management of food intake and nutrition are both key to good health.

Smart nutrition and food choices as well as any additional nutritional help in the form of supplementation can help prevent disease. Also eating the right food and getting the right advice when we are unwell can take us towards full health again.

Exercise

Exercise is essential to good health.  Most naturopathic plans incorporate some form of exercise for the client to reach their goal of good health.  The benefits of exercise are numerous - to improve cardivascular health, lower blood pressure amongst many others.

Exercise goals differ from person to person. For example tai chi , yoga and qi gong may be perfect for one, but another exercise with more resistance or running may be more suitable for another.

Each client’s individual’s needs are assessed and integrated into any plan.  This also depends on different health goals – whether it be weight loss/gain goals; pain relief and flexibility; keeping up with children or simply increased fitness.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the oldest and still the most widely used system of medicine in the world today.

Herbal medicines act on the human physiology to influence bodily activity, enhance or inhibit organ function, and are prescribed with the aim of correcting imbalances and resolving patterns of dysfunction. Herbal Medicine supports holistic treatment, so prevention of disease is as important as the treatment of acute or chronic disease.

Herbal medicine comes in dried form (such as teas or powders), tablets or liquid form.  Bespoke or personalised herbal formulations are often made for the client to suit their particular condition.  These are generally in liquid form, or can come from wildcrafted dried herbs sourced by the practitioner.

Supplements

Herbal medicines are often used in conjunction with practitioner only supplements. Examples would be vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, or sustainably derived oils. These supplements are sourced from those companies that use superior raw materials and avoid damaging manufacturing techniques. As a result the supplements represent excellent value as they deliver results.

Testing

Testing is either performed in-house (see examples below), with colloboration with your GP or through external laboratories.

What happens in a naturopathic consult?

After an initial discussion (this can be either in the consult or over the phone) , the client generally completes a comprehensive health appraisal, which will identify key areas of concern.

In house testing and examinations may include:

  • Face, Tongue and Pulse analysis (TCM based)

  • Initial Health Questionnaire

  • Review of any medical tests. Collaboration with external medical providers such as your GP are generally encouraged with any health recommendations.

This is then followed by a comprehensive evaluation of all signs and symptoms.  Current diet, sleep and exercise, medication, health history, genetic profiling are all evaluated.  Dietary influences and preferences are discussed as well as any goals or expectations that the client may have in relation to treatment.

Any further testing is further discussed as well as various treatment options, either with the naturopath or other allied/medical professionals.
